Vocabulary building through stories

Vocabulary building through stories

I read a book recently on how to have an amazing memory, thinking that it was somehow tangentially related to language learning as vocab building is a big part of it.  The method presented was about creating stories built around specific places so that the words became visual and therefore anchored in your memory.  It seems ideal because by anchoring a story in a place you have to learn specific phrases, ie the mother by the sink dropped a pan on top of the dog on the floor, etc etc.

Does anyone have experience using this method for vocab building, and ideally know how you might do this with children?
