What is more important: confidence or proficiency?
2012.05.14 20:42:53

In my discussion with the school regarding the possibility of bringing in an external teacher to teach the boys French during their normal French lesson, the headmistress brought up an important point:  French was one of the areas where the boys shine - so it is better to let them shine, or to remove them from that warm spotlight in order to become even more proficient?

It is not the first time the school has pointed this out to me:  their sensitivity to moving the boys DOWN a group in English or Maths, with the view to boosting their confidence and ensuring that their struggling to keep up isn't getting in the way of their learning.

Instilling confidence in children is one of those precious gifts that shouldn't be overlooked.

But if you put in a rabbit in a tortoise race, at what point do they just lie down and take a nap?
